Coon Care
Not all Maine Coons grow to be the same size. Slow and steady growth is best. Maine Coon cats continue to grow up to 4 years of age. If they grow too big too fast, they are more prone to having hip problems.
Maine Coons LOVE water! You will want to buy a fountain for your cat as they like water moving before they drink it. They are also very smart animals and can often figure out how to turn faucets on. Sometimes they will even crawl in the tub with you when you take a bath! Our male comes running when he hears the bathwater on; he likes to drink water out of our hands during bath time. Speaking of bath time, it doesn't hurt to give them baths on occasion. Most don’t mind them.
As mentioned previously, they are very smart animals. Maine Coons are big enough that if you have a 'handle' type door knob, don't be surprised if your Maine Coon can open the door on his/her own.
Maine Coons are long-haired breeds and do require extra brushing. They also sometimes require some 'grooming' to their backsides. Due to their large size, some Maine Coons can't clean their back end to satisfaction once they are fully grown.
Maine Coons should be on a good quality food with plenty of water. They need play time and exercise. They should have plenty of scratchers/cat trees. It is a good idea to start clipping nails at a young age to get them used to it. Many don't mind once familiar with it. If this is a struggle for your Maine Coon, doing it while they are napping is a great time to complete this task.
If you have a child in the home, they will likely become the cat's primary caretaker. They tend to bond really well with children.
